Help Kids in Need: Your Donation Provides Free Shoes and Haircuts

Did you know that just $40 can completely transform a child's confidence before the school year begins? Here's exactly how your donation reaches children in need — and why it matters more than you might think.

Did you know that just $40 can completely transform a child’s confidence before the school year begins?

That’s the cost of one fresh professional haircut and one pair of brand-new sneakers through the Cuts & Kicks Foundation. And right now — with back-to-school season approaching — your donation has never been more urgently needed.

The Numbers Behind the Need

Las Vegas is one of the fastest-growing cities in America, but growth doesn’t always mean prosperity for everyone. According to the Nevada Department of Education, more than 40% of students in Clark County qualify for free or reduced-price lunch — a federal indicator of economic need.

For these families, back-to-school shopping isn’t a given. Parents who are choosing between rent, groceries, and utilities often can’t prioritize new shoes or a salon visit. And their children bear the social and emotional cost of that reality every single day.

How Every Dollar Is Used

At Cuts & Kicks Foundation, we are committed to radical transparency. Here’s exactly how your donation is put to work:

Donation AmountWhat It Provides
$20One fresh professional haircut
$40One complete service: haircut + new shoes
$100Full packages for 2–3 children
$250Supplies for a group of 6 kids
$500Funds a full volunteer stylist station
$1,000Sponsors an entire event section for 25+ kids

85 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to our programs and services. The remainder supports community outreach and administration — and even that is kept lean by our incredible network of volunteers who donate their time.

Why Shoes and Haircuts? Why Not School Supplies?

It’s a fair question. And the answer comes down to dignity.

School supplies — pencils, notebooks, backpacks — are vitally important. But they’re also largely invisible. A child can receive free school supplies and no one knows.

But a child who shows up to school in worn-out shoes or with hair that hasn’t been cut in months? Their classmates notice. They notice. And that awareness shapes how they hold themselves, how they interact with teachers, whether they feel like they belong.

Research from the American Psychological Association shows that children’s peer relationships and self-perception are strongly influenced by appearance — particularly during the critical back-to-school period. When a child feels confident in how they look, they are more likely to:

  • Attend school regularly
  • Participate in class discussions
  • Form positive peer relationships
  • Develop a stronger sense of belonging

Shoes and haircuts aren’t luxuries. They’re investments in a child’s whole educational experience.

Recurring Giving: The Most Powerful Way to Help

One of the most impactful things you can do is set up a recurring monthly donation. Here’s why:

A recurring gift of just $20 per month means that over the course of a year, you’ve provided six children with fresh haircuts. At $40 per month, you’re covering a full service — shoes and a cut — for one child every single month.

Recurring donors also give us something priceless: predictability. When we know our funding is stable, we can plan earlier, order shoes in bulk at lower cost, recruit more stylists, and ultimately serve more children.

Stories That Stay With You

Last August, a mother pulled me aside after our back-to-school event. She had three children with her — all of whom had just received haircuts and new shoes through our program.

“I couldn’t do this on my own this year,” she said quietly. “I just couldn’t. And I didn’t want them to feel it. I didn’t want them to know.”

Her youngest, a girl of about seven, was spinning in a circle to make her new sneakers light up.

She didn’t know. She just felt good.

That’s what your donation does. It creates that moment — hundreds of times, every year, for children across Las Vegas.

How to Give

You can make a secure, tax-deductible donation online through our Donate page. We accept all major credit cards, as well as PayPal and Apple Pay.

Every gift, at every level, matters. Whether you give $20 or $2,000, you are directly changing the trajectory of a child’s school year.

As our back-to-school event approaches on August 9, 2025, your donation today helps us prepare: ordering shoes in advance, securing our venue, recruiting volunteers, and making sure every child who shows up goes home with a fresh look and new kicks.

Thank you for being part of this community. Thank you for choosing to show up for kids who need it most.
