Cuts & Kicks Foundation Takes Its First Step

Every movement begins with a single step. Ours began in a barbershop chair in North Las Vegas — and we haven't stopped since. Here's the story of how Cuts & Kicks Foundation came to life.

Every movement begins with a single step. Ours began in a barbershop chair in North Las Vegas — and we haven’t stopped since.

Where It All Started

In the summer of 2019, I was walking through my neighborhood when I spotted a young boy sitting on his front stoop, head down, clearly dreading the first day of school. I recognized the feeling immediately — that specific anxiety that comes not just from academic pressure, but from not feeling ready. From not feeling like you belong.

I stopped and talked to him. Turns out, he hadn’t had a haircut in months, and his sneakers had a hole in the toe. Small things to an adult. Everything to a ten-year-old.

I took him to the local barbershop. I paid for his cut. I bought him a new pair of shoes from the store down the block. And I watched something remarkable happen in real time: his shoulders lifted. He looked at himself in the mirror and — for just a moment — he smiled like he meant it.

That moment planted a seed I couldn’t ignore.

The Conversation That Changed Everything

I called my brother Joshua that same evening. We talked for three hours. By midnight, we had the outline of what would eventually become the Cuts & Kicks Foundation: an organization dedicated to providing free professional haircuts and brand-new shoes to underprivileged children in Las Vegas before the school year begins.

The concept was simple. The mission was clear. The need was enormous.

Las Vegas is one of the most economically unequal cities in the United States. For every gleaming resort on the Strip, there are families in our valley struggling to make ends meet — families where back-to-school shopping isn’t a given. Families where a new pair of shoes is a luxury.

Our First Event: 48 Kids. One Unforgettable Day.

In August of 2020, we organized our first back-to-school event at a community center in North Las Vegas. We had eight volunteer barbers and stylists, two tables full of donated sneakers, and a team of friends and family who believed in what we were trying to do.

We served 48 children that day.

I want you to understand what that number felt like: it felt like we hadn’t done enough. There were over 100 families on the waitlist. Kids who couldn’t get in. That day, we made a promise — next year, we’d be bigger. We’d be better. We’d serve more.

What We Learned

That first event taught us everything. We learned that:

  • Logistics matter as much as passion. We ran out of sizes in the most popular shoe sizes (boys 4–6, girls 3–5). We learned to plan inventory more carefully.
  • Barbers and stylists are the heartbeat of this mission. The volunteer stylists who showed up that day became the emotional core of our events. Watching them interact with the kids — giving encouragement with every snip — made us realize this was about so much more than a haircut.
  • Families are watching. Parents stood at the edges of the event with the kind of quiet gratitude that doesn’t need words. Several thanked us through tears. A few asked how they could volunteer next year.
  • Community shows up when you ask. We had donors, volunteers, and local businesses rally behind us in ways we never expected. Las Vegas, for all its glitter, has a deep and genuine community heart.

From Seed to Foundation

In 2021, we received our 501(c)(3) designation from the IRS — making all donations to Cuts & Kicks officially tax-deductible. This wasn’t just a legal milestone. It was a signal that our mission was recognized, formalized, and sustainable.

Since that first event, we’ve served over 500 children across the Las Vegas valley. We’ve given 650+ haircuts and distributed 800+ pairs of shoes. We’ve mobilized 75+ volunteers from across the community.

And we’re just getting started.

Why This Matters

There’s a body of research showing that how children feel about their appearance affects their attendance, participation, and academic outcomes. A child who feels embarrassed about their clothes or their hair is less likely to raise their hand, less likely to make friends, less likely to engage.

We’re not just giving kids haircuts and shoes. We’re giving them a fighting chance at the first day — and every day after.

What’s Next

This year, we’re expanding our events, deepening our partnerships with the Clark County School District, and launching a year-round shoe donation program so we can help families throughout the year — not just in August.

If you’re reading this and you’ve ever been that kid who didn’t feel ready — this foundation exists because of you. And if you’ve never been that kid, it exists so your neighbors’ children never have to be either.

Join us. Donate. Volunteer. Spread the word.

Every child deserves to walk into school with confidence. We’re going to make sure they do.
